Impact
Reduced time on tasks by 22-36 seconds. Increased task completion by 34-50%.

What & Why
When I initially joined Electric.ai, assessing the information architecture of our product was one of my top priorities! The goal was to assess how well the current navigation supported our users main goals and if it didn't, to fix that.
Research
In order to find out if there were any problems with the current navigation, I ran a usability test. I had testers attempt to accomplish some of the top tasks of our customer base.
-
Tested 12 people total
-
People that have never used our product before but use SaaS products for work
-
-
4 tasks total
Original Design

Findings
The good news, Baseline results showed majority of top level navigation elements are easily understood by users.
Bad news, secondary levels of IA for the tasks of onboarding and offboarding had lower rates of task success( less than 70%) and higher rates of time on task ( greater than 30 sec)
Updates
-
Navigation:
-
Created two different designs re-ordering the navigation elements to improve outcomes
-
-
Onboarding and Offboarding
-
Created three different designs to try to make these actions more findable
-
Test Again
Since navigation changes can be costly to users cognitive load, we wanted to make sure we got as close as reasonably possible to reduce needing to change things frequently for our users.
Results
New designs of the CTAs to start onboarding and offboarding reduced time on task by 20 seconds and improved task completion 34-50%.
A mixture of the designs is needed to accomplish the best outcomes, which include:
-
Re-order navigation
-
Increase the size of the onboarding and offboarding CTAs
-
Add those onboarding and offboarding CTAs to the home screen as well
-
Remove 'Company" from left nav and relocate to the upper right
What Went to Production
Here are all the changes that were applied and made visible in production.
